The Act of Investing
2008
Last weekend, I received a generous gift card to Kitson courtesy of Clean & Clear. Although I’ve been clicking around the boutique’s website once a week for the past three years, I had to actually shop at the store.
I walked in with every intention of putting my money towards a new pair of Marc flats. I tried on a few of his newest, including the mary janes that I have previously swooned about. I liked them, of course, but I just wasn’t sold. I couldn’t get past the idea of mixing navy with black, the impracticality of patent leather for campus and class, and the outrageous amount of toe cleavage.

I considered investing in a new party dress or a pair of ultra-glamorous button earrings that looked straight out of the sixties. I thought about splurging on a new tote for school or a stack of bright bangles. After thirty minutes of aimless wandering, a spotted a shelf stocked with a modest selection of J Brand. Since my experience with designer denim is nonexistent, I grabbed a few different sizes and styles and headed for the dressing room. I had to have the very first pair I slipped on. I’m glad I didn’t let their “capri jean” label deter me; they hit my short frame right above the ankle and looked like a divine dark denim version of Audrey Hepburn-inspired cigarette pants. Perfect with flats, sassy with heels, and ridiculously convenient for boots. Now I want another pair…
