After an awesome but exhausting week of interning, my roommates and I grabbed our softest blankets and cuddled up for a heart-warming marathon of the OC. Before I knew it, I was swooning over Seth Cohen and cringing at season-one-Valley-Girl Summer Roberts like it was 2004 again.

What I really couldn’t get over was Marissa’s sweet West Coast wardrobe. Her breezy tanks, ruffled skirts, and an enviable collection of flats just seem so right — right now. At a time when cliques of girls are clomping the streets in beat-up motorcycle boots, leather jackets, and skinny black leggings, pastel floral is just so… pretty.

Can’t you just see Marissa wearing this dress to the beach, to the mall, or better yet, to the Bait Shop?

A little bitching, and a weird dream

Bitching - Why do they rearrange the entire foodstore during shopping hours? I just came from the foodstore and wasted most of my shopping time walking around in a daze, unable to find anything. I wandered the aisles saying outload ‘where’s the wheat bread? and ‘I want Creamsicles’ I never did find brillo pads. Old folks were really upset and the people moving the stock are no help and kinda rude, like you’re in THEIR way. I worked retail/merchandising for 11 years, so suck it up people, it’s part of the job.

Weird dream - Let’s start out saying that I’m not a fan of Joaquin Phoenix. Not that I dont like him, but I don’t stay current with new movies, so I haven’t seen anything that he’s been in recently. No, I’ve never seen Gladiator, I saw maybe 20 minutes of Johnny Cash on tv.
But the other night I had a dream about him. He was my boyfriend and we worked in Lowes or Home Depot. We both had our hair dyed red. Not a nice red but a Demi-Moore’s-daughter’s-bad-red-hair-dye-job kinda red. So we must have really been in love to have matching bad hair dye. We were moving stock around the store with other workers (was this a premenition of today’s foodshopping daze?) I walked by the garden department and saw this hanging basket of pretty flowers, but I didn’t have any money to buy it. I was hoping that Joaquin would see me looking longingly at the flowers and maybe buy them for me. Then we were done work and went out into a parking garage (weird, because I never park in parking garages, there aren’t any even around here) There were other guys milling around and Joaquin was very distracted and I was worried because I didn’t know why. Then the dream was over.
So what does it mean? Why him? Maybe because I saw the wacky behavior beard and long hair story about him on tv, or maybe it was the post I read over at The Girl Can’t Help It . I woke up like, ‘Oh Joaquin’ and I had to google him.

On a positive note, some of you may know that I maintain a website about the history of Strathmere NJ. I’m always looking for old photos and stories to add to the website. A longtime follower of my website got together her friend’s old photos from the late 1940s and sent them to me on a disk. The photos are mostly like this one, groups of teenagers hanging out on the beach. I love the photos because they are about fond Strathmere memories and also because of the awesome swimsuits!

Change Your Look, Change Your Life

As you can infer from my recent poll, I have decided it’s time for a new name. I’ve been clinging to teenstyleista.com for years and years. The blog began in 2005, but the name was born years before as an amateur but very formative (for me!) website.

At this point in my life, I’m closer to adulthood than I am teenage years, and I’m okay with that. The name I’ve chosen is every bit as corny as the last, but I’m okay with that, too. As they say in The Holiday, one of my favorite films around this time of the year, “I like corny. I’m looking for corny.”

While I am no longer a teenager, I will always be born and bred in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. I will always marvel at the sight of Starbucks on every corner, I will always think that a town with a Target must be something special, and I will always envision Saks, Nordstrom, and even J. Crew in terms of their web presence instead of their physical stores, because that’s what I grew up with.

I will be infinitely grateful if you let me know what you think. You know how a new outfit puts a spring in your step? I can already tell that this new look will put a spring in my keyboard.

Wise words spoken by Ezra Koenig. Two of my life’s greatest loves finally meet: Teen Vogue interviewed Vampire Weekend! It was only a matter of time, being that two of the TV web staffers graduated from Columbia, as did the fine musicians of VW.

Don’t miss the rest of the interview, where Ezra says he wrote his college admission essay about Nick Drake and “young love” and likes to listen to 808s and Heartbreak while on the road. So cool.

The largest sign that my life is in shambles?

I missed last nights’ Gossip Girl. I missed it not because I had a prior engagement or an important meeting (who am I kidding, nothing could be more important than that standing date with the CW every Monday), but because I am currently so bombarded with deadlines and must-dos that I couldn’t even take an hour to turn on the TV. Sad, sad, sad.

Maybe I could have found an hour if I hadn’t spent the past week “multitasking” my way through homework, writing assignments, and… style week coverage. Although I haven’t had a chance to discover any budding designers or exciting new collections (thanksgiving break, perhaps?), my old favorites definitely have not disappointed.

Trovata: pushed-sleeve blazers, cuffed chinos, gingam

Shipley & Halmos: little skirts with grandpa sweaters, whimsical cocktail dresses

Karen Walker: ankle pants, “spectator” Keds, boy blazers

Boy by Band of Outsiders: elongated blazers with mini dresses, sassy buttondowns

Jenni Kayne: antique denim with gold sequins, vintage brown belts

Clearly there has been no shortage of wonderful menswear-inspired collections for women, but the menswear collections themselves have been even more divine. Trovata, Shipley & Halmos, Band of Outsiders… sometimes I wish I had a boyfriend, but only to dress him.

Speaking of menswear, I might have missed GG but all is not lost, because I get to take off and see Vampire Weekend (i.e. purveyors of preppy Trovata-eque threads) in concert tomorrow! After missing them in such a heartbreaking way over the summer, it will be truly monumental to finally catch them live. Pictures are promised!
